Mise en scene

What is mise en scene?

It is also known as “visual theme”. When applied to the camera, “mise en scene” refers to everything that appears before the camera and it’s arrangement. This includes the composition, sets, props, actors, costumes and lighting.

Why is mise en scene important in the opening of a film?

In any film the opening is a critical part and must be adapted and received positively by any audience. This is why the mise en scene is so cruital. The mise en scene builds up any atmosphere and setting to a film and so allows an audience’s first impression of what the film will be about and what they will be watching.

In the opening of a film we see four major sections that make up the mise en scene of the initial clip. This is the props, lighting, costume and setting. All four of these aspects are very important because they let us have a key insight into the overall premise of the film.

An opening of any film holds a lot of promise and this is why it is extremely important. It allows the audience to have a deeper understanding of the context that the clip has and makes up a basic starting point for the entity of the film.
